CHAPTER NINE

From across the room at Logan's Party House, Dylan looked at the bar and glowered as Eric Scanlon tucked a strand of hair behind Beth’s ear. Something about the quiet intimacy of the gesture got to Dylan more than if the captain had kissed her. That Beth stiffened and backed away was the only thing that kept Dylan from going for Scanlon's jugular.

That would be a nice show, O'Roarke, in front of a hundred members of the Rockford Fire Department. Maybe you could ruin Tom Jackson's retirement party.

"Dylan, honey, are you okay?" Marilyn Stevens scraped her long red fingernails down his suit-coat sleeve and moved closer.

"Sure. Why?"

"You're grippin' that beer so hard you're gonna break the glass." She leaned over and squeezed his biceps. "You've gotta watch out with these muscles."

As genuinely as he could, Dylan smiled at her. Beautiful Marilyn, with the hourglass body, mane of golden hair and heart-shaped face. She was dressed in a knockout little black thing guaranteed to spike any normal male's temperature. His type exactly. So why did she leave him colder than water trickling into his turnout coat? Maybe he wasn't trying. He swept his knuckles down her classically curved cheek. “Having fun?"

"Just being with you is fun, sugar." She leaned into him, one full breast brushing against his arm. He felt his body stiffen—not from desire—and inched back. "Though later tonight will be even better."

Dylan sighed and slouched against the pillar. Don't bet on it. He hadn't been with a woman other than Beth since Francey's wedding. Unintentionally his gaze locked with the scorching stare of the only woman he wanted tonight. Beth had obviously witnessed the exchange with Marilyn and wasn't happy. She looked so sexy in the short silvery dress that shimmered around her every time she moved. Damn her, why couldn't she admit her feelings for him? That was probably the most maddening thing about this whole mess.

He'd thought the same thing two nights ago after they'd made love—correction, after they'd had sex—and he'd confronted her about this evening…

"I don't suppose you want a ride to Tom's party Thursday?" he asked casually as she performed her usual ritual of dressing and leaving him alone in bed. "Since it's Veteran's Day Friday and the academy is closed, I thought we could…do something after the retirement dinner."

She hesitated, then eased down next to him on the mattress. Her silky auburn hair fell into eyes whose tenderness warmed him. Then she doused the feeling with her next comment. "I'm going to the party with Eric."

Struggling to keep his face blank, he said, "I see. And is he allowed at your condo?"

At least she blushed. "He's picking me up, yes."

"And taking you home."

She nodded. "Eric's in charge of Tom's party. I've been working on it with him since the beginning of October. I'd made plans to go with him a long time ago."

Furious, Dylan had gripped the brown striped sheets they'd just tangled together. "How convenient."

She’d watched him for a minute, then risen, picked up her duffel bag and silently left his house.
